Sutherland is Britain's largest county; remote, sparsely populated, offering peace and tranquility away from the crowds. The local area of Assynt located within the North West Highlands Geopark has a wealth of walks for all abilities, from a gentle stroll through ancient forest to a pebble beach at the White Shore or a full day's trek to the top of Suilven, the granite sugar loaf that towers over the village dominating the area's landscape. There are several sandy Blue Flag beaches along the coast, the nearest being Achmelvich with soft white sand and a turquoise sea reminiscent of a more tropical location. Lochinver has a prestigious Dark Sky Award.
Lochinver village located just one mile away has two mini supermarkets, several restaurants and two pubs, a petrol station, butchers, newsagents, ships' chandlers, various craft shops, the Highland Stoneware Pottery, a Royal Bank of Scotland Cash Point machine, the Assynt Medical Centre, Post Office, village hall, Leisure Centre, harbour, Lifeboat Station with RNLI shop and Tourist Information Centre.
